Staying Home With A Plan

Staying Home With A Plan

03 February 2021

We are all staying at home more and so it's easy to get bored and think we have nothing to do.  Having a plan and an easy to go to list of things you can do to keep busy and healthy can make a huge difference in your day to day experiences.  So put some music on and pick something off the list to do today.  Before you know it your Healthy Environment will shine.

Pick up nightly.

Make your first resolution to pick up and put things back in their place before going to bed.  This is an excellent way to get your kids and family involved.  We all have bedtime routines (brush our teeth, get into PJs, lock the front door) so adding picking up to the routine makes it much easier.  Also waking up every day to a straightened up house will do wonders for your personal health too.

Stay ahead of the chores.

Washing dishes as they become dirty is a quick and simple way to stay ahead of the pile.  No one enjoys coming home from work to a sink full of dirty breakfast dishes.

Plan ahead.

Wipe down the shower walls after each use to keep soap scum from building up.  After showering, open the shower curtain or leave the shower door open to allow fresh air in. This will help keep mold and mildew from growing in your shower.

Hang it up.

Hang up wet towels so they have enough air space to dry.  Bunched up towels on the floor all day will offer mold and mildew a perfect place to grow.

Declutter the mail.

We all get tons of junk mail daily.  Going through your mail right by the garbage can and tossing out unwanted junk mail will declutter your house daily.

Vacuum carpets.

Ok we all have tile, right?  But hey we also have those area rugs here and there.  Take time each week to vacuum out the sand, dust, and dirt.  Putting this one your weekly resolution schedule will make all the difference.

Dust with the right tools.

Invest in some micro fiber cloths and a high dusting extension pole.  Your dusting will fly by and your health will improve.  Dust allergens cause more sneezing than any other irritant.

Sanitize the toilet.

Your toilet can make you sick, plain and simple.  Give yourself a healthy boost and sanitize your toilet at least once a week or more.  Use Hard Surface wipes daily on the handle and seat, but once a week give your toilet a healthy sanitize inside and out.  Use a disinfectant and a long-handled toilet brush to swish it around the bowl, under the rim, and as far into the trap as possible. Let it sit several minutes and flush.

Attack the soap scum.

There is nothing worse than jumping in the shower to realize the walls, tub, and curtain/door are covered in soap scum..eeew!  Make a resolution to attack the soap scum and never feel gross in the morning again.

Change the bed.

Giving your linens a wash once a week will make your sleeping time so luxurious.  Send your bedding through a super-hot washing once a week will give you a healthy night’s sleep and a peaceful morning.

Clean the refrigerator, microwave, and oven.

Once a month empty out your refrigerator.  You would be surprised what has expired and needs to be tossed out.  Sanitizing the shelves and drawers will remove any spills but will also attack germs that can grow in your refrigerator.  Cleaning your microwave once a month will ensure that you’re not contaminating your food with left over residue.  If you use your oven on a daily basis then once a month clean it out.  Grease and food spills can not only be a dangerous fire hazard, but can also effect the taste and cooling temperature.

Disinfect where germs breed.

Disinfect all of your trash cans, especially those in the kitchen and bathroom.  Make sure to use hard surface wipes on all your door knobs, remote controls, cabinet handles, and any other highly touched area.

Dust all your hanging pictures.

Dust mites breed in areas that are not dusted regularly.  All of our beautiful family photos and decorative art work are perfect spots for dust to accumulate.  Removing this dust on a regular schedule reduces the amount of dust mites and germs in your environment.

Clean out your car.

Our cars are the most widely used environment we have, and the least likely to get cleaned on a regular basis.  Emptying out all the garbage and sanitizing the interior will boost your healthy environment and extend the longevity of the interior.

Clean the windows.

Our beautiful environments are surrounded by the most amazing views.  Having dirty streaked windows interferes with our peaceful view.  Making a resolution to clean the windows on a regular schedule will not only add to your healthy environment, it will offer your mood a boost as you marvel at your view.

The three month purge.

Our “seasons” revolve around the tourist seasons, so follow the tourist schedule.  At the beginning of every third month (Jan, April, July, and Oct) go through your closets and dresser drawers.  Refold all the linens and clothing.  Toss out or donate to charity any items not used or needed.  Straighten out your bathroom vanity. By putting these often over looked areas on your schedule you will be much more organized and less stressed.

Wash windows thoroughly, including the sills.

Monthly wash the windows for a clear view, but quarterly wash the windows inside and out and include the window sills.  Let the sun shine in through the seasons by keeping your home's panes sparkling.

Make doormats welcoming.

If you don’t have a door mat, give us a call and give yourself one.  A door mat is your first defense in stopping all that dirt and sand from entering your home or office.  Door mats receive a lot of use so quarterly give them a detailed cleaning.

Vacuum air conditioner ducts.

Vacuum air conditioning vents and ducts to keep air circulating freely and to save energy

Lighten up.

Help your energy-efficient bulbs shine.  Remove the covers on those ceiling lighting fixtures and wash the inside as well as the outside.  Don’t forget the light bulbs.   A few minutes with a stepladder, an all-purpose cleanser, and a microfiber cloth will give new light to your life.

Wash up.

Wash walls, cabinets, baseboards and woodwork. The walls may not look dirty, but dust and cob webs cling to walls and cabinets.  Making a resolution to give your healthy environment a thorough cleaning every three months will enhance your health and make your beautiful space shine.

Give ABC a Call.

By letting our trained staff come out to your beautiful healthy environment and sit with you to discuss your needs for the year you will be making the resolution to take charge of your space.  There are many areas that you will be able to maintain on your own, but there are also many areas that are just too large a project, or require special equipment.  Our consultation is free so you have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

Reseal caulking and grout lines.

Throughout the year the caulking and grout in our bathrooms, kitchens, and living spaces take a beating.  Mold sets into caulk, and dirt and sand can break the seal on grout.  Making a resolution to address these areas will enhance your healthy environment.

Shampoo the rugs and the tiles.

Having your rugs shampooed or your tile professionally cleaned will make a huge difference to your living or working space.  Moping the floors on a weekly basis is awesome, but nothing beats a deep cleaning and sanitizing.

Clean Upholstered Furnishings.

Our furnishings are a large investment and having all our furniture deep cleaned is an excellent way to increase the longevity while boosting our healthy environment.

Ensure Fire Safety:

Change batteries in smoke detectors (this should actually be done twice a year), and make sure units are free of dust. Teach everyone in your household how to use a fire extinguisher, and review escape plans.

Clean Window Treatments:

Many draperies and curtains are machine washable; check labels. Dry-clean fabric shades.

Pressure wash:

Dirt, grime, oil, and tree sap cling to the outside of your building, your deck, your parking area.  Having these areas treated with a pressure wash will enhance the curb appeal of your Beautiful Island space.
