Schedules Help

29 April 2020

Our kids are in the process of finishing out the year at home and that means much more activity around the house. Kids get bored easily and without the routine of daily classes, kids need the structure to remain active.  With summer break coming up fast there will be less schooling and more time to fill.

Having structure gives kids the control to succeed. Just like studying each week for a spelling test, having daily tasks to accomplish helps them get better and stronger in their own abilities.

Setting the tone for summer:

Making it clear to our children that there is going to be a schedule of activities during the summer lets them know in advance what to expect. If your children will be going to camp or other outside of the home childcare, creating a schedule for mornings and evenings will also help with structure.

Sleep Schedule:

When school is over it is too easy to ease up on the sleeping schedule of our children. With less of a need to jump out of bed and get ready for school, bedtimes inch later and later. This is counterproductive to structure in a child’s life. Having enough sleeping hours whether in school or not is very important in the development of our children’s bodies, and definitely plays a huge part in children’s mood swings. Do yourself and your kids a favor and stick to a regular sleep schedule all through the year.

Age appropriate activities:

Depending on the age of your child, having chores around the house is similar to having homework during the school year. A simple guide to ability level can help with picking chores that will foster growth in your child’s abilities.

Engage is the goal, not perfection:

If your child has never engaged in the activities above, take the time to teach them how to complete the task. Don’t focus on perfection, rather focus on the effort. Give your kids lots of praise for learning new things and reaching their goals.
