Dust Mite Removal

19 July 2020

Dust mites are microscopic, insect-like pests that generate allergens. These allergens can trigger allergic reactions and asthma in many people. Hundreds of thousands of dust mites can live in the bedding, mattresses, upholstered furniture, carpets or curtains of your home. They feed on the dead human skin cells found in dust. The harmful allergen they create comes from their fecal pellets and body fragments. Dust mites are nearly everywhere, gross right?

Effects on our Health

Mites are one of the major indoor triggers for people with allergies and asthma. Ongoing exposure to dust mites at home can dramatically impact the health of people with asthma and those who are allergic or particularly sensitive to mites. A dust mite allergy can range from mild to severe. A mild case may cause an occasional runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing. In severe cases, the condition is ongoing, or chronic, resulting in persistent sneezing, cough, congestion, facial pressure or severe asthma attack.

Where do Dust Mites come from?

Dust mites occur naturally and can appear in nearly all homes. Humidity is the most important factor in determining whether a house has high concentrations of dust mites. Dust mites do not drink water like we do; they absorb moisture from the air.

How do we come in contact with Dust Mites?

Dust mite allergens, unlike pet allergens, do not usually stay airborne. They cling to particles that are too heavy to remain in the air for long. Dust mite allergens settle within minutes into dust or fabrics, such as pillows, bedding or upholstered furniture, which serve as nests. Most exposure to dust mite allergens occurs while sleeping and when dust is disturbed during bed-making or other movement.

How to Battle Dust Mites

Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) while cleaning

Most exposure to dust mite allergens occurs when dust is disturbed during bed-making or other movement. Wearing a protective mask and gloves will reduce your contact and reduce your inhalation of these irritating pests. We offer a wide variety of protective equipment including masks, gloves and more.

Clean Efficiently

We have said it before, but it is worth repeating, clean from top to bottom, right to left, or inside to out. Efficiency makes for less time that you’re exposed to allergens, which means less symptoms and a healthier you. Our staff are fully trained in the correct way to clean your environment.

The Washing Machine Soldier

Washing your clothes, sheets, pillow cases, blankets, and decorative throw pillows in very hot water using a detergent designed to disinfect and sanitize is like sending in the Army to fight these dust mites. We offer laundry products that will attack the allergens, while leaving your laundry clean and fresh.

Think of Microfiber as the Dust Mite Magnet

Dust Mites and allergens attack on a microscopic level, so using a microfiber cloth instantly attracts these particles, statically holds them, and removes them. Toss the microfiber clothes in with your laundry and presto no more dust mites. Our microfiber clothes and pads offer the best defense against allergens and dust mites and are easily washable, over and over again.

Clean the sneaky places Dust Mites Hide

Air conditioning vents are notorious breeding grounds for dust and dust mites. Using an extension pole and a microfiber pad will make cleaning these hidden areas a breeze. The same goes for fans, high ceilings, shelves, pictures on the wall, books on the shelf, and any hard surface area. Our highly trained staff members always ensure that your high dusting areas are addressed so you don't have to worry about dust mite build up.

Carpets are a Dust Mites Playground

In most USVI homes tile is the preferred flooring, but throw rugs, area rugs, and bathroom rugs are dust mite territory. For small area rugs machine washing and drying will kill most of them (don't forget to dry the rugs, these pesky critters love moisture). But for large area rugs an ABC Sales & Services professional cleaning will remove these allergens and give you a healthy environment. In between rug cleaning using a vacuum with a CRI certified or HEPA filtration filter will significantly reduce allergens being redeposited in your space. Need replacement filters? No worries we deliver for free as you need.
