National Safety Month: PPEs

27 May 2021

June is National Safety Month and workplace safety is no accident. According to AMMEX, the leading manufacture of safety gloves, occupational accidents and injuries affect every industry and can majorly impact an employer’s bottom line. Businesses spend $170 billion a year on costs associated with occupational injuries and Illness. However, workplace accidents can be substantially reduced with a solid safety program incorporating personal protective equipment (PPE).

Taking the time to keep stocked on Personal Protective Equipment means your staff will always have the tools necessary to complete their job tasks.

Gloves:

Safety gloves used to be full of Latex and powder that would irritate the user’s hands and wrists, this made wearing them uncomfortable and lead to a lax in protection. The new and improved gloves offer a latex free material that is more comfortable to wear and offers much less irritation.

Wearing protective gloves when working with any type of chemicals, dish detergent, or bodily fluid will protect the user against harmful accidents.

Goggles:

Protecting our eyes from chemical splashes and the spray of bodily fluids is just as important as wearing gloves. Our eyes are openings into our bodies and foreign matter can enter our bodies this way.

Wearing protective eye wear is a major step in protecting ourselves from infections and transmittal diseases.

Dust Masks:

Protecting our lungs is of great importance when dealing with dust particles or allergens. Wearing a mask to create a barrier will protect us from these tiny particles.

When working with bodily fluids or construction materials protecting our mouths can save us from infection and illnesses.

Even when cleaning the house, wearing a dust mask while dusting can save us the irritating results of dust in our lungs.

Rubber Soled Shoes:

Having our feet protected from chemical spills is one reason to wear close toed shoes, but having rubber soled shoes help to protect us from slipping and hurting our bodies.  Supplying shoe covers ensures your staff do not track dirt or chemicals into your work environment.

Wearing proper shoes goes a long way in keeping our bodies safe from slips, falls, chemical spills, and other hazards on the floor that can cause us harm.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) (formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets or MSDS)

Click the heading above for an example of an SDS.  These documents contain information on the potential health effects of exposure to chemicals, or other potentially dangerous substances, and on safe working procedures when handling chemical products.

Wherever chemicals are stored a copy of each individual chemicals SDS should be easily accessible in the case of an emergency. If there is an emergency these sheets should be referred to and taken with the injured person to the hospital if needed.
